I'm up and running...I'll get a proposal up by the time I go to bed tomorrow night...

How FUN is this!!! Thank U Nick. How you did this?

Anyway, I was thinking of activities for our school and thought about having the Armenian students and their parents come to a Welcome Day, which would occur before school opens. We can have students give them a tour of the campus, and give each student a buddy to help them learn the "ropes and rules" of the school.

Emily- I like your buddy day- I was also thinking about a Peer Mediation or Conflict REsolution group for the kids...and maybe even one for the parents??

In response to Monique's e-mail:
I agree we want to come in early next wednesday.

I think it'll be hard to meet the weekend before the 16th because that is mother's day weekend, but we could do it on the 14th (Monday)or the 10th (Thursday)perhaps?

As for the blog- we don't all need to log in at the same time. Post when it's convenient, but continue to check the blog so you can see what your group members have posted.

Also, I posted a proposal...I'm new to the blogger thing so it is a separate Post...I don't know if you guys can post, too, or just put in comments, does anyone know?

Nancy, the proposal looks great! I will research gender roles in general, as opposed to gender roles in gangs for which I found nothing. Dana mentioned we need to include how we will handle the cultural differences between the role of women in Armenian culture and women in positions of authority in American culture . I would imagine we need to interview the faculty and staff of the school from which the students came to discuss general issues, and specific issues regarding the respect of women on campus and diciline issues. I was wondering if we need to address if the school is sending random Armenian students or the worst dicipline problems and how does that affect our plan? In regards to PR, we need to create an interview with the newspaper and the community newspaper in order to head off any inflamatory headlines. Also, for the Welcome Day, I was thinking we already do a Welcome Day for all incoming freshman and their parents, do you think it wise to do a separate (but equal) Welcome Day for our Armenian students? If so, do we invite the Armenian student to come to both or one of the 2?
We've made provisions to share information with the staff, how are we going to communicate the 2 issues with the current and incoming student body BEFORE the first day of school?

...and one more thought based on Dana's feedback from last night, we need to include how we are going adapt the curriculum to reflect the new change in our student body and not cause resentment?

Well, a lot of the PD for teachers focuses on using culturally relevant teaching- including role models, designing activities based on learning styles and strengths of students, etc.

As for the welcome day- we'll have new 10-12th graders, too. maybe do two separate welcome days- one for freshmen, one for new upper-classmen?

Good questions about addressing the students...does it have to be before the first day of school or can we address it at the beginning of the year with the kids while they're on campus? This would provide us with an easier way to break the students down into smaller groups to discuss...or maybe a letter home acknowledging the confict and stating our positions? hmmm...

You're right, CREE meets that goal. I do think we need to let the current and incoming student body know about both issues. I'm hoping the best case scenario is we, (the admin team) learn about this at the end of this academic year in order to plan for the 07-08 year.
I was thinking our plan would begin to unfold during the last month of school and we can inform the exisiting studentbody via homeroom I know we need to iron out the time line to all be on the same page.... We must do a letter home explaining both issues, the solutions being considered, and an invitation to 1st townhall meeting to discuss issues, hear concerns etc..

that letter could be our PR tool, don't you think?

okay, I see how this works now. I've already posted two comments on the wrong page
1. don't forget that homework 3 is due on WED
2. don't forget that we are meeting early on WED
3. the parent meeting sounds good from Emily
4. I will have a sample brochure on Wed (part two of the assignment-PR tool)
5. we must include what the professor mentioned (the way we will change the curriculum and how they (ARMEN.)threat their women)
6. I did not know it was mother's day. I am down with meeting that Monday EVEN ( I would say around the same area we meet for class (to stay unifrom and fair???- Bob'b Big Boy???) what do you all think?? As long as we meet after the first sets of groups go, so we can learn from them and hear the professor's comments.

the first round of presentations is tonight, because next week we have double schroeder. I do feel like we are a lot closer now than when we departed last Wednesday- I think we get 20 minutes this week together, so let's regroup and see what needs to still be done. We can always meet early again next week, too.

I am also happy to meet before our presentation, but that monday (14th) and tuesday (15th) are bad. I have a friend in from NY and it feels very last minute to me- i'd rather do it a bit earlier and have time for final tasks if needbe. Can we all bring a calendar tomorrow to see when we are all free?

Hey, I am looking up a couple of things- I was thinking that it would have some prominent figures from both cultures so I've found some photos for a small display.

I also found an article (that I haven't read yet!) on a pilot program from 2000 between Latino and Aremenian American students at GRant High. I'll let you know if there's anything good in it.

And I am also looking for books by both Armenian American and Latino authors- do you guys have any?
